Genealogy data from inside Russia cannot be easily obtained. AHSGR provides a contact to Dr. Igor Pleve, a professor of history with a special interest in the Eastern European area which includes land up to the Ural Mountains This incorporates the land of the Volga Germans. Dr. Pleve of the University of Saratov, Russia, is considered an accurate genealogy researcher for the German Russians. He does charge a fee for the charts he and his wife prepare.

The Galka/Wunsch Chart is available through AHSGR or by contacting me.

Nearly everything i have entered in Wikitree concerning my Wunsch ancestry has come from the Chart he prepared for me. I have accepted Dr. Pleve's Information as my true genealogical history. There is no way to further validate it.

The chart prepared for me had some Wunsch persons in Galka who he couldn't attach to a specific Wunsch family although there can be no doubt they ARE related. Only one Hessen immigrant with the surname Wunsch came to the Volga Villages in response to Catherine the Great's Manifestos. Later a Wünsch (umlaut) arrived in the Black Sea area but there is no relationship between the families.

I am also Volga German- actually a cousin to Dr. Pleve, through our grandmother (my great great grandmother) who was from the colony of Marienthal, Saratov, Russia (east side of the Volga).

Is there a project for Volga Germans?

Also, unfortunately, Dr. Pleve was arrested in Russia for releasing his findings (genocide of Volga Germans and other peoples). I’ve spoken with his daughter, Anna, and she’s just waiting to hear back about their latest appeal.

Anna is also a good resource for Germans from Russia (including Black Sea/Dnieper/Dniester/Ukraine Germans) as she was taught by her father, and is fluent in Russian/German/English/Latin (Catholic records are in Latin) and proficient in Spanish and Portuguese (many cousins emigrated to Brazil and Argentina, although most came to the Midwest of the US).
